How it works

Your performance. Your learning. Your voice.

There isn't one correct way to learn English. Everyone has different interests, strengths, challenges and ways of working.

ActLingo gives you a framework, the resources and the coaching. You bring your imagination, personality and commitment.

1. Choose something you love.

Start with a character, a scene, a speech or a monologue that interests you.

Our growing library includes material from film, television, theatre and literature, with different genres, characters, styles and levels of difficulty.

You might want to be funny, frightening, dramatic, persuasive, mysterious or completely ridiculous.

It's your choice.

2. Get inside the words.

Before you perform, you need to understand what you're saying.

We'll explore vocabulary, expressions, pronunciation, rhythm and meaning. We'll look at the character, the situation and what you're trying to communicate.

You won't just learn what the words mean. You'll discover how to make them mean something.

3. Make it your own.

Start working on your piece.

Record yourself. Listen back. Try different approaches. Experiment with pronunciation, pace, expression and delivery.

We'll give you practical feedback and help you identify the things that will make the biggest difference.

You decide how you want to develop your performance.

4. Rehearse, experiment and improve.

This is where the learning really starts to take shape.

Repeat the difficult bits. Try new expressions. Work on the sounds that challenge you. Practise until the words become more natural.

You can work independently, with a partner or in a group.

We'll help you stay on track, but the work is yours.

5. Perform.

Bring it all together.

Perform your monologue or scene, either individually or with others. Record it and keep it.

Compare it with your first attempt. Notice what has changed.

You might be surprised by what you can do.

6. Create something of your own.

Once you've found your feet, why not go further?

Write a monologue. Create a character. Devise a scene. Adapt a familiar story or invent a completely new one.

We'll help you develop your writing, workshop your ideas and bring your creations to life.

You aren't just learning someone else's words. You're developing the ability to express your own.

And then you start again.

A new character. A new challenge. A new performance.

Your English keeps growing.
